Trends in Faux and Wood Blinds

I have noticed a trend in the wood and faux wood blind product offering that I thought you might find fascinating.  Within the last couple years, multifamily housing starts have driven the new home statistics.  The single family home seems to be ebbing, as costs and/or location are unacceptable to many younger home buyers.  Because of this, high density condos, lofts and apartments are springing up in desirable locations, while larger homes with a long commute are reserved for retirees and those with a many kids.

So how has this housing trend affected the wood and faux wood blind business.  Well, we are seeing more of these high density projects rejecting the old vertical blind application in favor of a wood or faux wood blind choice.  This is driven by falling prices for wood and faux wood blinds, via decent quality Chinese imports, coupled by a real design trend away from vertical blinds.  You would probably be surprised at how many people tell us that the actually HATE vertical blinds.  That's right, we hear person after person say they hate vertical blinds.  That is not to say that people still don't opt for verticals on their sliders - but only to save money - not because they want them.

This HATRED of vertical blinds has caused a rather significant shift away from the affordable vertical blind and toward the affordable wood and faux wood blind.  So, if you are a project manager, architect or designer for a large multifamily housing build - you might consider what the word on the street is regarding vertical blinds vs wood or faux wood blinds.  Also, if you are a consumer of this type of housing option, this is something else to consider, as you choose your home - do you want the window covering more and more people HATE? Or do you want the simple, affordable alternative - wood or faux wood blinds?

We are ready and able to help you with your multifamily wood and faux wood blind project.  Please contact us for special pricing and a custom quote for your project.

Faux or Wood Blinds on French Doors

Quite often, customers will purchase faux or wood blinds for throughout their entire home.  However, there is always a pause when it comes to how to handle the doors.  For a sliding door, a different type of window covering is generally advisable.  Honestly, people do try and sometimes place a wood blind over a sliding glass door, but it is such a poor application, fraught with difficulty, that we just will not sell the application.

However, french doors are quite another matter.  A faux or wood blind is quite appropriate for use on a french door and accomplishes the goal of price control and continuity of look.  So what is there to know about your french door wood blind?  Well, if you have a lever type handle, the blind will close down behind the handle but will create a need to work the blind around the handle when open.  Also, it may be necessary to help the slats around the handle when tilting the blind and/or raising and lower the blind.  Finally, it is recommended that the bottom portion of the blind be held down with special hardware - called hold-down brackets.  These brackets hold the bottom rail in place as the door is opened and closed.  While the center of the blind may slightly sway and/or knock against the window trim - the secured bottom will prevent the wood or faux wood blind from swinging wildly.  Of course, if you want to raise the blind, you will first have to unclip the bottom rail from the hold-down brackets.

Cut-outs for Your Wood or Faux Wood Blinds

So, what is a cut-out?  Well, a cut-out is a custom notch in your wood or faux wood blind that allows the blind to fit around some obstruction in a window.  We generally encounter the need for a cut-out in windows that have some sort of wrap-around tile, in some section of the inside portion of the window frame.

If you were to choose a non-custom wood or faux wood blind, then you would either have to make the entire blind narrow enough to fit inside the tile wrap - or else - stop the blind on the top of the tile.  If you can visualize this - you would correctly be imaging rather large - and unsightly gaps - on either the sides or bottom of your window.

However, there is an option.  With custom made wood or faux wood blinds, you can have them made with a pre-positioned notch that allows the blind to operate around the obstruction while keeping a uniform and beautiful look.

We would love to help you with you wood or faux wood blind project.  We have done lots of windows with tile cut-outs.  Also, check out our online wood and faux wood blind cost estimator designed to help you budget for your project.
