How to Clean Your Wood Blinds Without Voiding Your Warranty

If you look online for advise of how to clean your wood blinds, you will find videos of people putting their blinds in the bathtub, hosing them down in the backyard, and spraying all sorts of cleaning agents on them.  Now, to be sure wood blinds are fairly tough and will hold up under lots of abuse before giving out, but most of these practices will void your manufacturer's warranty.

Keep in mind, this only applies to your REAL wood blind not your FAUX wood blind.  So with that said, here is the manufacturer approved methods for cleaning your wood blind.

Actually, occasional cleaning is recommended.  Your blind can be cleaned in place or you can take it down. By tilting the slats down, but not quite closed, you’ll be able to clean most of the top surface of each slat.  Your blind can be cleaned by wiping it with a soft cloth,  feather duster, dusting mitt or by using the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner.

Do not use water, solvents or any type of abrasive to clean the blind. This will cause damage to the blind, which is not covered under your warranty.  In a very dusty environment, a non-wax furniture polish can be used to clean the blind.

Of course, maybe you are ready for some new wood blinds in which case we would love to help you.

Creating a Template for a Wood Blind in an Arched Window

Occasionally, it is necessary to create a template of an arched window so that your manufacturer can properly fabricate your arch shaped wood blind.  More often than not customers struggle with this part of the process, but it can be handled fairly easily.

Here is the step by step for making a template of an arched window.

To create a template you will need a sheet of paper that will allow light to show through and is large enough to cover the opening (we recommend craft or butcher paper).
  1. Tape the paper over the window opening.
  2. Outline the opening of the window with a well defined line.
  3. Remove the paper from the window opening and cut the template out. There should be no rough or jagged edges.
  4. Place the template back into the opening to verify it is the correct size. The template should also match your measurements. (The fabricator will make the wood arch 1/4” smaller for an inside mount to allow for installation clearance)
  5. Mark the template to indicate the top of the window and which side of the arch faces out into the room.
  6. Roll the template, place in mailing tube and mail it, along with your completed order form, to your fabricator.

Now, your manufacturer has what they need to make you a perfectly sized custom window covering.

Of course, we can handle all of this for you and we would love to help you with your wood or faux wood blind project.  Also, for a rough idea of what your project might cost, check out our online wood and faux wood blind calculator.

Faux Wood Blind Project in Mesa Arizona

10/11/2015

It is our pleasure to share some pictures of a recent 2" faux wood blind project done in a recently renovated home.  The result was really amazing.  The customer opted for a bright white color and paired several of the windows with bright white drapery side panels.

Additionally, she chose a bright white vertical cell shade for the sliding door and a bright white wood shutter for a large arched window that faced the front of the house.  The total transformation of this home which included new cabinets, counter tops, appliances, floors and paint was nothing short of extremely well done.  It is a joy to participate, with our part, on these sorts of total transformations.

Of course, we can advise you on your total transformation and we would love to help you with your wood or faux wood blind project.  Also, for a rough idea of what your project might cost, check out our online wood and faux wood blind calculator.

Consumer Product Safety Council Compliance

All of our wood and faux wood blinds are fully compliant with the Consumer Products Safety Council standards for window covering safety.  The issue is that young children and pets can become entangled and strangle in cord or bead loops. You must use safety devices to reduce access or eliminate loops.

Young children can strangle in the loop of pull cords, chain and bead cords, and cords that run through window coverings. They can also wrap cords around their necks. To avoid strangulation and entanglement, keep cords out of the reach of young children. Also,
  1. install safety devices that remove the cord loop or reduce access to cords, and
  2. move cots and furniture away from window covering cords.

Keep in mind the safety devices installed on wood and faux wood blinds reduce the strangulation hazard in the pull cord by removing the loop.  However, manufacturer safety devices still require parental or guardian care to ensure a terrible accident does not occur.  To that end, there are a few simple things you can do to ensure your house is safe as it relates to your wood or faux wood blinds.  They include:
  1. Do not tie the cords together.
  2. Check cords periodically to make sure the cords have not twisted into a loop.
  3. Remember, your blind safety device will not prevent strangulation hazard if young children wrap pull cords around their necks.
  4. Always keep cords out of the reach of young children.

Of course, we can advise you on this and we would love to help you with your wood or faux wood blind project.  Also, for a rough idea of what your project might cost, check out our online wood and faux wood blind calculator.
