Wood and Faux Wood Blind Valance Considerations

Here is a quick "did you know that" heads-up.  The top piece that covers your wood or faux wood blinds headrail is called a valance.  No, that is not the heads-up.  The heads-up comes when you are ordering wood or faux wood blinds for large windows.

Heads-up 1 - For Basswood Blinds: Any valances over 84" will likely need to be made of two pieces and spliced in the center.

Heads-up 2 - For
Engineered Faux Wood Blinds: Any valances over 106" will require the valance to be made of two pieces and spliced in the center.

But, here is the little twisty turney aspect of this decision.  For larger windows, real wood is a better option because they are lighter and can be ordered as one blind for the whole window, but the valance will be spliced.  However, if ordering a faux wood blind on a larger window, the blind must generally be ordered as multiple blinds on one head rail, or else the warranty is waived, but the valance can come as one piece.

So, which is a better option?  We will usually recommend real wood with the spliced valance on large width windows simply because the one piece blind looks cleaner then multiple blinds on one head rail.  Of course, if the functional use of the window lends itself to multiple blinds on one head rail, then that is what we opt for.

Hopefully, knowing this information will help you have an educated conversation with your window covering professional and avoid any little. "oh, you didn't know that" moments at the time of install.

White Wood or Faux Wood Blinds

By far, white is the most popular color for wood and faux wood blinds.  But, what often surprises folks is when we say great, "Which color white would you like?"  At this point we produce color decks with anywhere from three to twenty different shades of white.  To which they respond, "I thought white was just white."

Because choosing a shade of white can be daunting here are a few tips to help you along the way:
  • Look at the whites in bright sunlight.
  • Look at them in a lighted room.
  • Look at them in a darkened - night like - setting.
  • Consider if you need to match or coordinate furniture, finishes, flooring, walls or other decorative objects.
  • White can be stubborn and white wood blinds don’t always work well with other white trim or decor looking muddy or dramatically mismatched.

In general. whites fall into six categories:
  • neutral
  • chalky
  • creamy
  • cool
  • muted
  • gray

Each of these families of white color work well together in your space but mixing different families of white colors can create a confusing and chaotic look.  For instance, your chalky whites work best with pastel colors, while the neutrals work best with the beige and tan colors and can can look yellowish. You get the idea.  As you examine the options against your white decor you will be able to see the different families of whites emerge and quickly reject the ones that clash.

Hopefully, you feel ready to explore the world of white colors in all their different expressions and make your space something that works well with your wood or faux wood blind selection.

Choosing a Slat Size for Your Wood or Faux Wood Blind

Did you know that wood and faux wood blinds can be purchased with 2" slats, 2 1/2" slats and even 1" slats?  A slat is the horizontal piece of wood or poly material is the majority of the blind,  The standard size is a 2" slat and unless you are specifically seeking something different, this is the size you are most likely to end up with.  Just think about 98% of the wood and faux wood blinds you see and you will know what the 2" slat size looks like.  Here in Arizona, they are literally everywhere.  The good thing about the 2" slat is that it is the most cost effective size.  It's mass quantity makes it less expensive.

However, you will occasionally encounter a window application where greater see-through is desired.  Or, situations with very large windows where the larger slats look more to scale.  If you are paying attention, these windows will jump out at you as they do have a slightly upscale look.

On the rare occasion you may encounter a wood or faux wood blind with a 1" slat.  This is usually on a french door or in a window with a very small sill and very unique interior design.  Honestly, these are extremely rare to find, but they are an option if your situation requires a 1" slats unique look and function.

We hope this information better helps you understand your options as it relates to wood and faux wood blind slats. Maybe you are ready for some new wood or faux blinds for your space in which case we would love to help you.  Also, for a rough idea of what your project might cost, check out our online wood and faux wood blind calculator.
